Sending a local parcel: a checklist from packing to handover

A local delivery request needs more than a destination. The rider or delivery provider also needs to know what is being carried, how large it is, where to collect it and how the recipient will receive it. Preparing those details before booking can reduce avoidable delays.

Check whether the service suits the parcel

Describe the contents accurately and check the provider's accepted items, size and weight limits. A document envelope, a fragile household item and a bulky package may need different handling or a different service. Do not assume a standard local rider booking includes special handling, insurance or cash collection.

If the item has restrictions or needs a specialised carrier, confirm acceptance before booking. Read the platform's current terms and ask official support if suitability is unclear. Never conceal the contents to get a request accepted.

Pack for the actual journey

Use packaging that fits the contents and closes securely. Keep loose parts together and prevent the item moving around inside the package. If the contents need special handling, tell the provider in advance; writing “fragile” on a box alone is not an agreement that the service can carry it safely.

Check that the label remains readable after the package is sealed. Remove old delivery labels so the rider is not left with two conflicting addresses. For documents, use a closed envelope and keep a record of what you are sending.

Give both addresses equal attention

Confirm the collection and delivery points separately. Include the house or shop number, street, area, landmark and the correct contact person at each end. If a map pin is available, check it against the written address. Mention a building entrance or reception desk where relevant.

  • Who will hand the package to the rider?
  • Who will receive it, and will they be reachable?
  • Are there building access hours or entry restrictions?
  • Does the package require a vehicle larger than the available option?
  • What should happen if the recipient cannot be reached?

Confirm the service and charges

Review the pickup window, estimated delivery timing and displayed cost. Clarify whether waiting, a return trip or a changed destination could create an extra charge. Treat any timing shown as the estimate or commitment described by that specific service, rather than assuming every local delivery is immediate.

If a seller needs the rider to collect money from a customer, check whether that arrangement is supported. Do not add cash collection as an informal note to a service that has not agreed to provide it.

Keep the pickup and delivery records

Before handover, check that the pickup details match the booking. Keep the delivery reference and the confirmation provided by the platform. Where useful, record the sealed package's condition without including unnecessary personal information.

Tell the recipient to expect the delivery and to keep their contact number reachable. Use the available order status or confirmation to follow the request. If a handover cannot be completed, use the official support process rather than making a second booking without checking the first one.

Report a problem with specific details

For a delay, missing package or incorrect handover, provide the delivery reference, the expected pickup and destination, and a concise description of the issue. Keep the original confirmation and relevant communication. Review the refund and cancellation policy and the service terms for the process that applies.
